Leaf Texture Pressed Plates - Kids Friendly Pottery Project

Looking to get creative with a simple, beginner-friendly project using minimal tools? This one is for you, and it’s kid friendly too.

All you need is some clay and a few fun textures to make your own little pressed-leaf trinket plates. They’re perfect for snacks, holding a teabag, keeping jewelry, or just adding a handmade touch to your space.

Tools: rubber rib for smoothing, pin tool for trimming, water, sponge, and leaves for texture.

Step-by-step guide:

  • Start with a smooth slab. Use the rubber rib to even out the surface.
  • Place your leaves on the slab with the veins facing down. Press them gently into the clay with your fingers or the rib. Lift the leaves carefully so the texture stays clean.
  • Cut your plate shape freehand. You can make circles, ovals, squares, or any organic shape you like. Use the point tool to trim the edges cleanly.
  • If you want a raised rim, lightly press around the edge with your fingers to curve it upward. Support the clay with your other hand so it does not crack.
  • If the rim needs strengthening, you can add a thin coil underneath it. Slip and score the underside of the rim and the coil, attach it, and smooth it with your sponge.
  • Write or stamp your name on the back of the plate. Smooth the back lightly with the sponge if needed.
  • Allow time for slow and even drying, fire it in the kiln and the plates are ready for glazing!
