Pottery 101 – Common Pottery Terms Explained Simply

Starting out in pottery and feeling confused by all the technical terms? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Here are some common pottery terms that will help you feel more confident when attending your first pottery making workshop with me at Curvy Pots Handmade.

  • Wedging: The process of kneading the clay to remove air bubbles and make it smooth. This is an important first step before you start shaping.
  • Centering: A crucial step in wheel throwing where you push the clay into a centered position on the wheel to ensure it doesn’t wobble while you work.
  • Kiln: The oven-like machine where pottery is fired to become hard and durable. Your pieces will go through two rounds of firing—once to harden the clay and once to set the glaze.
  • Glaze: The liquid coating applied to pottery before the second firing. It gives your pottery its color and glossy finish.

Understanding these basic terms will make your first pottery workshop feel a lot more accessible. Don’t worry if you don’t remember everything right away—just bring your curiosity and I’ll guide you through it!
