Pottery vs. Ceramics: What’s the Difference?

Curious about the difference between pottery and ceramics? While these terms are often used interchangeably, they actually refer to two distinct aspects of the craft.

Pottery specifically refers to objects made from clay that are shaped and fired in a kiln, like bowls, mugs, and plates.

Ceramics, on the other hand, is a broader term that includes all objects made from clay—whether they're functional pottery or decorative items like tiles, sculptures, or fine art.

So, while all pottery is ceramics, not all ceramics are pottery. Knowing this distinction will help you better understand the many types of clay work you can explore in your pottery journey!
